Teneriffa - eine eigene Welt

Inselkarte

Tenerife is the biggest of the Canary Islands with an area of 2.058 km2 and is home to approximately 800.000 inhabitants. The island´s capital Santa Cruz de Tenerife has about 200.000 inhabitants. The island consists of a central mountain and numerous valleys, countless bays and beautiful beaches. More than 40% of the island are under wildlife protection. The highest elevation on Tenerife is mount “Pico del Teide”. At 3718 m above sea level, the volcano which last erupted in 1798 is also the highest mountain in Spain. The Cañadas´ gigantic primeordial crater has a diameter of 19km. Inside it stands the conic Mount Teide, which is often snow-covered during the winter months, a fact which gave the island its name: Tenerife means nothing else than “snow-covered or white mountain”. The Cañadas del Teide were proclaimed a national park in the middle of the 50´s.

A great nature reserve in the northern part of the island – the Anaga Mountains - invites you to go hiking and relax. Also, the greenish and fruitful Orotava Valley is a region of historical and culinary interest and diversity. In the south, the sun-hungry can do all possible kinds of watersports or just go sunbathing. The best part is the island´s rich diversity, holding numerous opportunities to make discoveries.

Climate

Due to the close proximity to the Atlantic Ocean and the trade winds, Tenerife´s climate is unusually well-balanced. Temperatures fluctuate only slightly in the course of the year, they seldom fall below 20 degree Celsius in winter and always stay moderate during the summer months.
